Chatty

J is getting supper chatty and I love it.  I think it's so sweet how she coos away.

Josie - 6 Weeks

Although Josie is now 7 weeks now, I just downloaded her 5 and 6 week photos...so here's a comparisson on Josie (left) and Annabel (right) at 6 weeks (perhaps the pumpkin jammies tipped you off to who was who).

Annabel wanted to ham it up with J.

And here she is at 5 weeks - we didn't take one with Annabel.

J's Ptosis Diagnosis

Yesterday Matt and I took J to see a pediatric opthomologist to assess her left eye, which habitually doesn't open quite as much as the right, and to review her eye infection that she's had since birth. We left with a few more diagnoses than expected including astigmatisms in both eyes and nearsightedness. Her pupils are also a little turned out, which we hope will resolve itself in a week or two with normal development. If not, that's a whole other can of worms.

The main takeaway is that she has congenital ptosis of the left eye. Basically that means the muscles in her eyelid are weak and therefore she doesn't open it as much / the eyelid is droopy. Ptosis occurs at varying levels but the more serious concern is that her eye opens enough for her vision to develop properly. Right now she's doing okay but it is something we'll have to monitor ongoing.

I wasn't in love with the doctor but personal feelings aside she didn't give us much more than we need to go back to see her next month. There was not a lot of dialog about patching (the good eye) or other therapies besides the surgical remedy. I walked away disappointed but perhaps the next appointment will be better.

All in all, we're happy to hear that as of right now there should be no developmental impacts. Admittedly, I was wishing she was going to tell us this is just something she'll grow out of but today her eye isn't that bad, unless she's tired or it's bright outside, when she tends to close the eye altogether. It's actually kind of nice to have a little indicator that tells us when she's sleepy in case we miss those yawns!

4th of July

Went to the Redwood City 4th of July parade, then stopped by a block party with a fantastic toddler jump house. It was so hot that Josie was miserable so we BBQ'd at home, then set up a super ghetto picnic in our bedroom where we had a window air conditioning unit set up (we broke down after a miserable few days with Josie and the heat.)

Annabel & Josie: Weeks 2 and 4

I am going to try to continue to take pictures of Josie with the bunny to watch her grow.  But it's also fun to compare A + J at the same times.  In the pictures below, Josie is on the left and Annabel is on the right at the following intervals:

Two weeks (both asleep!)

4 Weeks

Josie's got a new pink bunny of her own but for comparisson's sake we brought out Bluebell.  Obviously J is quite a bit bigger than Annabel.  At her 4 week appointment she weighed in at 10 lbs. 3 oz. where at that same point Annabel was only 8.5 lbs.  To that effect, Josie has 3 chins, Annabel only had 1.

Tomorrow J will be 5 weeks...already.

Josie's first trips to the beach - Half Moon Bay

Let's pretend it's still June and I can post pics from 2 weeks ago...
During a recent heat wave (for northern California) we took a trip to the coast for Josie's first beach trip. Annabel enjoyed the cold water with Matt while Josie and I stayed shaded in the tent for most our time there.

A few days later we headed back to cool off again with a few friends and their kids.  Taking a 3 week old and a toddler to the beach might not be the best idea (apparently you cannot chase a toddler through a stream to an island with a baby whose diaper just exploded, nor can you play in the waves while feeding said baby), but with the help of friends we survived the trip!

Yoga

A free kids yoga class is offered at a local Athleta store and Annabel was really into it. Here she is with some of her friends. As well as an impressive "bunk bed" move by Emily and Quinn.

I also love this photo that Em took after class at Pete's...we're turning into a mob run by a bunch of toddlers.

Newborn Photos - Josie Day 5, Annabel 2.75 Years

Here are just a few of our favorites, in addition to the ones the photographer gave us a sneak peak of a week or so ago.  We're especially happy she got a few nice ones of A + J together, because we can't seem to get A to both smile and look at the camera ourselves.  Check out the photographer on Facebook under Triple the Sugar Photography.
